  • In Gaza, Israeli strikes killed at least 16 Palestinians over the weekend, including children in a tent encampment; all crossings were closed Monday following Iranian missile fire, cutting life-saving aid; ceasefire implementation talks continued in Cairo with Egyptian, Qatari, and Turkish mediators.
  • In the West Bank, Israeli forces shot and killed a seven-month-old Palestinian baby in Hebron on Friday; settler violence and military raids continued across the territory.
  • In Ukraine, a Russian drone struck a nuclear fuel storage facility inside the Chernobyl exclusion zone, killing three civilians; Russian guided bombs also killed three in Zaporizhzhia; Ukraine launched extensive drone strikes on Russian refineries and naval facilities near St. Petersburg.
  • In Sudan, drone strikes attributed to the RSF killed at least 13 civilians in North Kordofan; 19.5 million people face acute food insecurity and 14 areas are at risk of famine according to the IPC.
  • In Myanmar, resistance forces continue to hold approximately 42% of territory while the junta controls only about 21%; a new federal democratic steering council was formed in March 2026 to coordinate political and military strategy.
  • In the DRC, the Ebola outbreak reached 515 confirmed cases across Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces, with 27 new cases reported on 6 June.

Middle East

Iran–Israel Escalation

The fragile US-brokered truce between Iran and Israel shattered overnight on 8–9 June 2026 in the most serious direct exchange of fire since the April ceasefire. Iran launched a wave of ballistic missiles at northern Israel, which it said was a response to Israeli airstrikes on Beirut's southern suburbs on Sunday. Israel responded with strikes on multiple Iranian cities, with explosions reported in Tehran, Tabriz, and Isfahan; the Israeli military confirmed it struck a petrochemical plant in Mahshahr. Democracy Now!

By Monday morning, Iran announced it was halting its military operations, warning that "if the aggressions and acts of mischief continue — including in southern Lebanon — much more severe and crushing actions than before will follow." President Trump posted on Truth Social urging Israel and Iran to "immediately stop 'shooting,'" and said he had called Prime Minister Netanyahu to urge restraint. Netanyahu subsequently said Israel's "fire is on hold." Democracy Now!

The Pentagon's Defense Intelligence Agency recently raised its counterintelligence threat assessment for Israel to "critical," amid growing concerns that Israeli intelligence agencies were eavesdropping on American negotiators working on a ceasefire deal with Iran. Trump told the Financial Times that Netanyahu had no choice but to accept a deal, saying, "I call all the shots. He doesn't call the shots." Democracy Now!

Lebanon

Israeli airstrikes continued in Lebanon despite a US-brokered ceasefire renewed just days earlier. On Saturday, Israeli attacks across southern Lebanon killed at least 10 people, including a brigadier general, a captain, and a Lebanese soldier. An airstrike in Beirut's southern suburbs on Sunday reportedly killed two people and injured 20, including women and children, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. UN OCHA

Since March 2026, Israeli attacks have killed more than 3,500 people in Lebanon and displaced over a fifth of the country's population. Five collective shelters hosting displaced families in South Governorate were evacuated over the weekend due to Israeli army displacement orders. OCHA warned that, without immediate funding, the humanitarian response could be disrupted as early as 1 July; a revised Flash Appeal called for an additional $331.5 million to help 1.4 million people. UN OCHA

Gaza Strip

Israeli strikes killed at least seven Palestinians and wounded 15 others on Saturday when the military bombed a large tent encampment in the heart of Gaza City; children were among the dead and wounded. On Sunday, an Israeli strike on a police station and a vehicle killed at least nine people and wounded 20 others. Since the ceasefire took effect in October 2025, Israeli attacks have killed approximately 961 Palestinians and wounded 3,020, bringing the total death toll since 7 October 2023 to 72,980, with 173,012 injuries. WAFA; CGTN (Chin)

On Monday, Israeli authorities closed the Kerem Shalom crossing — the only crossing into Gaza that had been operational for cargo over the past two weeks — following Iranian missile attacks toward Israel. Rafah Crossing was also closed. OCHA stressed that people in Gaza rely on a steady flow of humanitarian and commercial goods and that such closures directly threaten life-saving aid delivery. UN OCHA

Ceasefire implementation talks were held in Cairo on Sunday in the presence of Egyptian, Qatari, and Turkish mediators. The discussions focused on a proposed roadmap for completing the second phase of the ceasefire agreement, including Hamas's position on disarmament and the administration of Gaza. Hamas said disarming the resistance should come only after a full Israeli withdrawal from the strip. CGTN (Chin); Asharq Al-Awsat

West Bank

On Friday 6 June, Israeli forces shot and killed a seven-month-old Palestinian baby in Hebron city and injured both parents when their vehicle came under fire as it approached an Israeli patrol. Israeli authorities indicated the incident would be investigated. The killing sparked renewed tensions between Israelis and Palestinians. UN OCHA; WAFA

In Nablus, Israeli forces raided Balata refugee camp on Saturday, arresting one Palestinian; clashes resulted in injuries and tear gas exposure. Raids, search-and-arrest operations, and other military operations have become a regular occurrence, with more than 20 operations on average each day across the West Bank during the first five months of 2026. The UK announced it would sanction Israel over a settlement project that would cut the West Bank in half, making a two-state solution impossible. UN OCHA

Russia–Ukraine Conflict

A Russian drone struck a nuclear fuel storage facility inside the Chernobyl exclusion zone on Sunday, heavily damaging a fuel reception building close to where large amounts of nuclear material are stored. Ukrainian officials said radiation levels remained within normal range. The IAEA called the strike "deeply concerning" and said inspectors would visit the site. In the Zaporizhzhia region, Russian guided bombs hit a public transit stop in Balabyne, killing three civilians and wounding three others. Democracy Now!; UN OCHA

Ukraine launched extensive drone strikes on Russian refineries and military facilities around St. Petersburg, including the Kronstadt Naval Base, in what Russian officials described as an "unprecedented" attack. On 2 June, Russia had launched one of its heaviest barrages of the war, firing 73 missiles and 656 attack drones at Kyiv and multiple regions, killing at least 22 people and injuring more than 100 across Ukraine. Russia Matters

Russia Matters analysis of ISW data for the four weeks ending 3 June 2026 indicates Russian forces recorded a net loss of 93 square miles of Ukrainian territory, approximately double the loss during the previous four-week period. Russian President Putin, at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on 4 June, claimed Russian forces had taken control of more than 2,400 square kilometres of territory and that the Luhansk People's Republic was "completely" under Russian control — a claim disputed by independent analysts and repeated multiple times since 2023. Russia Matters

On 4 June, Ukrainian President Zelensky proposed peace talks to Putin in an open letter, stating Ukraine was "ready for a full ceasefire for the duration of the negotiations." Putin reportedly responded that he did not "see the point" in meeting with Zelensky. Russia Matters

Russia's perspective: RT (Rus) reported that Russian forces were advancing "calmly but confidently" toward their stated objectives in eastern Ukraine, citing Putin's SPIEF address. RT characterised Ukrainian drone strikes on St. Petersburg as acts of terrorism targeting civilian infrastructure.

Africa

Sudan

Drone strikes attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) killed at least 13 civilians in Sudan's North Kordofan region, according to rights groups. Since January 2026, drone strikes specifically have killed at least 880 civilians in the Kordofan region alone. Near-daily strikes have been reported at the Chad–Sudan border, where Médecins Sans Frontières treated 116 wounded in a single month. ReliefWeb / OCHA

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis published on 3 June 2026 found that around 19.5 million people — 41 per cent of Sudan's population — are facing high levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above). This includes 135,000 people in IPC Phase 5 (Catastrophe), characterised by starvation and death due to acute malnutrition. Fourteen areas in North Darfur, South Darfur, and South Kordofan are at risk of Famine if conflict intensifies further. More than 8.9 million people have been internally displaced, and 40 per cent of health facilities are non-operational. ReliefWeb / IPC

A joint statement from international partners on the Sudan political track, issued on 8 June, expressed "deep concern over the devastating humanitarian consequences of the ongoing conflict, where millions face displacement, acute food insecurity, and a near-total collapse of basic services." The International Peace Bureau called for an immediate, unconditional ceasefire, the protection of humanitarian corridors, and an end to arms transfers to parties engaged in documented genocide and war crimes. US State Department; International Peace Bureau

Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Ebola outbreak in the DRC continued to expand, with health authorities reporting 27 new confirmed cases on 6 June, bringing the total to 515 cases across Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces. Ituri remains the epicentre, accounting for approximately 95 per cent of cases. Response efforts face significant challenges including gaps in contact tracing, limited treatment capacity, and shortages of essential medicines. The outbreak is unfolding amid a severe humanitarian crisis in which nearly 15 million people across the DRC need humanitarian assistance. UN OCHA

Myanmar

Myanmar's civil war entered its fifth year with the military junta controlling only approximately 21 per cent of the country's territory, while resistance forces and ethnic armed organisations hold roughly 42 per cent, with the remainder contested, according to the Council on Foreign Relations' Global Conflict Tracker drawing on a BBC World Service investigation. The junta's recent tactical gains — including the recapture of Kyaukme and Hsipaw in northern Shan State in October 2025 and Lashio in April 2025 — have not translated into restored governance or durable state power. Asia Times

Fortify Rights documented 304 paramotor and gyrocopter attacks on civilians across Sagaing, Magway, Mandalay, Ayeyarwady, and Bago between December 2024 and January 2026. Human Rights Watch documented escalating airstrikes, artillery, and drone attacks across all 14 states and regions in 2025. The military's growing dependence on Chinese and Russian drones and air power has shifted momentum in specific theatres but has not reversed the strategic fundamentals. Asia Times

In March 2026, the National Unity Government, the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, and major ethnic revolutionary organisations — including the Karen National Union, Kachin Independence Organization, Karenni National Progressive Party, and Chin National Front — formed the Steering Council for the Emergence of a Federal Democratic Union to coordinate political and military strategy toward a federal democratic order. Four years into the civil war, statistics stand at over 82,000 dead and 3.2 million displaced. Asia Times

Philippines Earthquake

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sarangani Province in the southern Philippines on Monday, killing at least 19 people, leaving 12 missing, and injuring more than 130 others. Extensive damage was reported to homes, government buildings, hospitals, and schools. Power and telecommunications outages were reported, and damage to roads and bridges limited humanitarian access to some communities. OCHA said it was working closely with the government and partners to assess the impact. UN OCHA
